AMERICANO

AMERICANO (1 drink)

The Americano was first served in the 1860s at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, Italy.  It consists of equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth topped with sparkling water.   The name is thought to result from the drink’s popularity with Americans, who arrived in Europe in large numbers to escape Prohibition in the United States during the 1920s.

NEGRONI (1 drink)

The Negroni, a one-to-one combination of gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, is said to have been invented in the early 20th century at the Bar Casoni in Florence, Italy.  Italian Count Camillo Negroni reportedly asked the bartender to fortify his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by replacing the usual soda water with gin.  The barkeep also used orange peel, rather than the usual lemon peel, as garnish.  The result became one of the most popular stirred drinks in history, one which has spawned many iterations over the years.  While the Campari generally remains constant, sub bourbon for the gin and you have a Boulevardier.  Rum or mescal also are sometimes swapped.  And the flavor of your favorite sweet vermouth also will change the taste of the drink.
