HAITIAN CHOKOLA AYISYEN (hot chocolate, for six to eight)

1 cup water

rind of ½ lime

1 cinnamon stick

2 star anise

1 vanilla pod, split

½ cup dark cocoa powder

¼ cup brown sugar

2 cups coconut milk

1 cup whole milk

pinch of salt

 


 

1. In a large pot, bring to a boil the water, lime rind, cinnamon, star anise and vanilla. Reduce heat to a simmer and add cocoa. Stir until dissolved.

2. Add brown sugar, coconut milk, whole milk and salt. Stir until sugar and salt are dissolved. Strain to remove the spices and serve hot.
